Man Holds Door Too Long, Trapped In Politeness Standoff

Metadescription: A man becomes locked in a prolonged social exchange after holding a door for a stranger who was too far away.

A local man became trapped in an extended politeness exchange after holding a door for a stranger who was still an indeterminate distance away.

Witnesses say the man initially just intended a brief, courteous gesture, but became locked into the situation once eye contact was made. As the other person slowed their pace slightly, the man reportedly adjusted his grip on the door and committed fully.

“At that point, it was too late to let go,” said one observer. “They had acknowledged each other as good people.”

According to sources, the man smiled several times while the approaching individual alternated between walking faster, apologizing verbally, and performing a small jog that suggested urgency without confidence. Both parties reportedly insisted the other “take their time,” despite the visible strain.

Experts say these situations can last anywhere from three seconds to what feels like several years.

“He couldn’t stop holding the door without appearing rude,” said a local etiquette specialist. “And the other person couldn’t arrive faster without implying the gesture was excessive.”

At press time, the man was still standing in place, arm extended and nodding reassuringly.
